A steady stream of warm oil is poured in slow, rhythmic patterns over the third eye in the centre of the forehead. The effect is a deeply relaxing, meditative and indulgent experience. Shirodhara regulates the three doshas and primary systems of the body; vata which controls the nervous system, pitta with responsibility for the endocrine system, and kapha governing the immune system. Although this treatment is considered to be tridoshic it has the most significant effect on balancing vata and calming the nervous system. A short face massage to prepare for the Shirodhara helps to relax and prepare the body and mind to surrender and a short rest afterwards is beneficial in order to extend the calming effects of the treatment.
