Cooling the Fire: An Ayurvedic Guide to Surviving a Heatwave

If this month's heatwave has left you feeling a little more frayed than usual, you're not alone — and Ayurveda has a name for what's happening.

Intense heat is a classic trigger for excess Pitta, the fire element that governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation in the body. When Pitta rises too high — whether from weather, stress, or overexertion — it can show up as irritability, skin flare-ups, heartburn, disturbed sleep, and a general feeling of being overheated, both physically and mentally.

The good news: Ayurveda offers clear, practical guidance for cooling and calming the system at exactly times like this.

Pitta-Balancing Practices for the Heatwave

A few simple adjustments can make a real difference while the heat persists:

•       Favour cooling foods — sweet, juicy fruits, cucumber, coconut, and leafy greens, while easing back on chilli, garlic, alcohol, and excess salt.

•       Hydrate generously — room-temperature or cool (not ice-cold) water throughout the day, herbal teas like fennel or mint, and coconut water are all wonderfully pacifying.

•       Avoid the midday sun — Ayurveda has long recognised midday as a time of peak Pitta; shade and rest are far more supportive than exposure.

•       Slow the pace — intense exercise or pushing through fatigue adds fuel to the fire; gentler movement, like an early morning or evening walk, is kinder on the system right now.

•       Cool the senses — soft, calming colours, fragrances like rose or sandalwood, and time near water can all have a quietly soothing effect.

Practised consistently, these small shifts can make a noticeable difference to how settled and comfortable you feel as temperatures climb.

Spotlight Treatment: Sarvanga Abhyanga with Shirodhara

One of Ayurveda's most cherished combinations is Sarvanga Abhyanga — a full-body warm oil massage — followed by Shirodhara, a continuous stream of warm oil poured gently over the third eye.

What makes this pairing so remarkable is its versatility. Rather than working on one dosha alone, it offers deep, regulating support across all three:

•       For Vata — the slow, rhythmic strokes and steady flow of oil calm an overactive nervous system, easing anxiety, overwhelm, and the scattered, ungrounded feeling excess Vata can bring.

•       For Pitta — the treatment has a gently regulating effect on the endocrine system, helping to settle both physical and mental heat, irritability, and the internal "overheating" that intense weather or stress can trigger.

•       For Kapha — the stimulating, circulatory benefits of the massage combined with the deep nervous system reset of Shirodhara help lift lethargy and support a more responsive immune system.

Together, these two treatments form a true cornerstone of Ayurvedic care — the Abhyanga preparing and softening the body, while the Shirodhara settles the mind at a deeper level. Many people leave this combined treatment feeling something has genuinely shifted, regardless of which dosha they tend to run high in.

Given the current heatwave, it's a particularly well-timed treatment for anyone feeling overheated, wired, or simply depleted by the conditions.

If you're feeling the effects of the heat and would like some support in restoring balance, book a Sarvanga Abhyanga with Shirodhara — I'd love to help you find some calm.
